Hire with Confidence
Make an informed decision knowing your tradie is properly licensed, insured, and qualified.
Before you hire, check the licence
Getting work done on your home is a big deal. You're handing over your hard-earned cash and trusting someone with your biggest asset. A quick licence check takes 30 seconds — and it could save you thousands.
Dodgy work costs real money
Unlicensed operators might quote cheap, but shoddy work means paying twice — once for the job, and again to fix it. No licence often means no warranty, no insurance, and no comeback if things go wrong.
Your insurance might not cover it
Many home insurance policies won't pay out if work was done by an unlicensed tradie. A leaking roof or faulty wiring from an unqualified worker could leave you completely out of pocket.
It's about safety, not just money
Electrical, plumbing, and gas work done wrong isn't just expensive — it's dangerous. Licensed tradies have the training and qualifications to do the job safely. It's not worth the risk.
It's actually the law
In every state and territory, certain trades require a licence by law. Hiring an unlicensed operator for regulated work can void your consumer protections — and in some states, you could be liable too.
Licences expire and get suspended
Just because someone was licensed last year doesn't mean they still are. Licences can lapse, get suspended, or have conditions added. A quick check shows you their current status — not what they tell you.
Free, instant, straight from the source
We pull licence data directly from your state's official government register. No sign-up, no fees, no catch. Just type a name and you'll know in seconds if they're legit.
How trade licensing works across Australia
Australia does not have a single national licensing system for tradespeople. Each state and territory runs its own register, sets its own rules, and enforces its own standards. A plumber licensed in Queensland holds a QBCC licence. The same trade in Victoria requires VBA registration. In New South Wales, it falls under the NSW Building Commission (formerly Fair Trading). The requirements, licence classes, and even the terminology differ from state to state.
For homeowners, this fragmented system makes verification harder than it should be. If you are hiring an electrician in Sydney, you need to check the NSW register. A builder in Brisbane means the QBCC register. A painter in Melbourne means the VBA register. Each has a different website, a different search interface, and different data formats. TradieVerify solves this by pulling licence records from all eight government registers into one search.
Across Australia, more than 50 trade categories require some form of licensing or registration. The most heavily regulated trades are electrical, plumbing, gas fitting, and building work, where unlicensed work is a criminal offence in every jurisdiction. Other trades like painting, tiling, fencing, and landscaping have licensing requirements that vary by state. Queensland regulates the most trade categories through the QBCC, while the Northern Territory and ACT regulate fewer.
Licensing exists to protect homeowners. A licensed tradesperson has completed accredited training, passed competency assessments, holds insurance (including government-backed warranty insurance above certain dollar thresholds), and is subject to disciplinary action if they do substandard work. When you hire a licensed tradie, you have access to state-backed dispute resolution and consumer protections under Australian Consumer Law. When you hire someone without a licence, you lose most of those protections.
