DMIRS — Western Australia

The Western Australian government department regulating building, electrical, gas, and plumbing services, and licensing tradespeople in WA.

What Is DMIRS?

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) is the Western Australian government department that regulates building and energy services in WA. Through its Building and Energy division, DMIRS administers the licensing of builders, painters, electricians, plumbers, gasfitters, and other tradespeople. It also investigates complaints, enforces compliance, and provides consumer guidance on hiring licensed professionals.

Key Functions

DMIRS Building and Energy is responsible for:

  • Licensing — issuing and renewing registrations for building service practitioners, including builders, painters, building surveyors, electricians, and plumbers
  • Compliance and enforcement — investigating unlicensed work, defective building work, and breaches of the Building Services (Complaint Resolution and Administration) Act 2011
  • Complaint resolution — providing a formal process for consumers to lodge building complaints and facilitating conciliation and orders for rectification
  • Safety regulation — administering electrical, gas, and plumbing safety standards in WA
  • Consumer information — educating homeowners on their rights, how to check licences, and what to do when things go wrong

DMIRS provides a public licence search on the WA Government website where you can verify a tradesperson’s registration status, category, and any conditions or disciplinary findings.

How It Relates to Licence Verification

DMIRS is the authoritative source for building and trade licences in Western Australia. TradieVerify integrates WA licence data alongside registries from every other state, allowing you to verify a tradesperson’s credentials regardless of which jurisdiction they are registered in. A current DMIRS registration confirms the holder has met WA’s qualification and compliance requirements.
